The screams of girls could be heard throughout the halls of Zekkou High, and there could only be one cause for it. Yuri Chinen, renowned playboy, had just entered the school. Although he may not be a pop star, to these girls, he was the closest to it that was in their reach.

“Yuri Chinen… everyday we have to go through this.” Yuri just smiled at Ryutaro.

“I wouldn’t enjoy school otherwise.”

“Don’t you have a girlfriend?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have never had a girlfriend.” Ryutaro burst out laughing.

“Come on, Yuri. Those rumors these past couple of years couldn’t have been for nothing.”

“Think whatever you want. Go to class before the teacher punishes you. If I let that happen, what would your ane-chan say to me.”

“Seri-chan? It’s not like you’d have to tell her. Besides, I’m the one who focuses in school. I don’t know about you on the other hand.” Yuri laughed.

“If I was slacking, would I have been ranked number one last year?”

“It’s because you had Seri-chan to help you before she left for America to study with our aunt.”

“Then come ask me for help if you need it.”

“I don’t want to. You always have some girl over at your house anyway.” Yuri smiled.

“And what do you think we’re doing, huh?”

“I… I don’t know. I don’t want to know.” Yuri laughed at Ryutaro’s innocence.

“I promise you that I’m not doing anything but helping them with their work.”

“Try telling that to Seri when she comes back.” Yuri looked at Ryutaro when he heard those words.

“Seri’s coming back? When?”

“In a week, at least that’s what she told me and our parents.”

“Oh, really? Well, let’s hurry before class starts. And I’ll come tutor you tonight at your house instead of you coming to mine if you feel more comfortable.” Ryutaro laughed.

“I was just kidding about that. I know you wouldn’t do that. But what do you do with those girls that I see you with the all the time?”

“They’re just friends.”

“Friends? Do you really think I’m going to believe that?” Yuri pushed Ryutaro towards his class.

“Yes, after all the years we’ve known each other, yes.”

“Prove it then.”

“Okay. Come hang out with me and one of my ‘girlfriends’ after school today then if you’re not busy.”

“Okay. See you after school then.”

“Yeah.” Ryutaro rushed to his class as Yuri entered his. Immediately, girls surrounded his desk, asking him personal questions to which he responded with lies.

[Gomen… but there’s already a girl that I’m waiting for.]

At the end of the school day, Yuri went down to Ryutaro’s class to walk to the café together, where they were going to meet up with one of Yuri’s friends. When he got there, Ryutaro was cleaning.

“Why are you cleaning?”

“Punishment.”

“No way. For what?”

“I got the lowest score for our class.” Yuri asked at him.

“I thought you said that you were focused?”

“I am… I just don’t understand.” Yuri laughed.

“Okay, I’ll definitely come help you tonight.”

“Okay. I’ll be done in 15 minutes, so if you want to head out first, then go. I’ll catch up with you later and your ‘girlfriend’.” Yuri just smiled.

“Okay. See you soon then.” Yuri left. As soon as he was off school grounds, he dashed down the streets to the café that he had always enjoyed when he was younger. Yuri burst through the door. At his request, due to his close relation with the owner, the café had been closed for the evening.

“Seri!” Upon seeing her best friend she stood up and smiled.

“Yuri-san!” Before she could even move though, she was already being picked up and swung around in a tight hug from her best friend. She couldn’t help but laugh.

“I missed you too. Can you put me down now?”

“No. I’m not letting you leave again.” Seri laughed at Yuri as he set her down.

“So how have you been, Miss Seri?”

“Very good. And you?”

“I’m doing well myself.” Seri just couldn’t help but laugh. It had been such a long time since she last saw Yuri, and seeing him now just made her too happy for words.

“I can see you’ve gotten prettier.”

“Haha. Very funny. I can see you’ve grown more handsome as well.”

“Of course! I am the Yuri Chinen after all.”

“Yes, our Yuri only. Thanks for helping me with this surprise. I can’t wait to see Ryu’s expression. I’ve missed that little guy so much.” Yuri smiled.

[I’ve missed you a lot too.]

“We’ve all missed you. So how are your studies in America going?”

“Good. But I’m coming back here for college. Right now we’re on vacation, so my aunt bought me a ticket to come visit you all as a gift for doing so well.”

“You were always the smart one.”

“I know. It’s too bad Ryu didn’t get those genes.” Yuri smiled as he responded to Serenity’s statement.

“He’s intuitive, but he just doesn’t know how to apply that to school.”

“Wow this place is empty. Yuri, what did you do to all the customers?” Both Yuri and Seri turned towards the café entrance.

“I asked to have it closed early so I could introduce you to my friend.”

“Wow, is she that important?” Ryutaro looked at them, and seeing who Yuri’s friend was, he nearly cried.

“Seri-chan! I thought you were coming next week!” He ran to give her a hug.

“It was a lie. I wanted to surprise you, mom and dad. So, are you surprised?”

“Of course. But if I start lying, don’t blame me. I’m learning from you two older people.” Seri sarcastically gasped.

“Yuri, what have you been lying about?”

“He breaks girls’ hearts.” Yuri and Seri laughed.

“Oh, that only? I’ve heard about that already. And whose heart wouldn’t get broken when they see that face of Yuri’s? They all but fall for that face. It’s too bad Yuri belongs to me already.” They all laughed at Seri’s joke.

“What would you like to eat, Seri? I’ll buy it for you.”

“Really now? What happened to our greedy Yuri?”

“For you, I’ll give everything.” The two just laughed, but Ryutaro began to feel awkward, as if he was the third wheel of a date.

“No. Let’s just go home and have mom cook a meal for us. It’s cheaper and mom will be very happy to see you.”

“Ryu’s right. Let’s go Yuri.”

“Yes.” Yuri thanked the owner and the three of them left the café.

Ryutaro led the way, followed by his sister and Yuri, giggling and whispering together.

[What is going on? Yuri couldn’t be hitting on Seri-chan… could he?] They arrived at the Morimoto household. Upon entering, Seri was showered with kisses and hugs from her parents.

“We thought you were coming next week!”

“I wanted to surprise you so I told you that.”

“And the only person you let in was Yuri? You’re so mean. I thought I was your favorite guy.” Seri hugged her dad.

“You’re so funny. You’ll always be my favorite guy. Yuri is number three, after you and Ryu.” Ryu smiled at his ane-chan.

“it’s good to know.” Yuri just wrapped an arm around Seri’s shoulder.

“It’s okay with me. Yuri is my fifth favorite… and my fourth… and third and second and first.” Mrs. Morimoto laughed.

“Yuri, you are too sweet. How about I go make some dinner for us tonight?”

“Yes! Nothing beats mom’s cooking!”

“I would love to stay, but I have to go.” Seri turned to face Yuri.

“You have to go somewhere?”

“Yes. I have to meet up with someone.”

“Who?”

“Secret.”

“Hey! Best friends don’t have secrets.”

“Well this best friend does.” Yuri hugged Seri.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” Yuri stood up, bowed to Mr. and Mrs. Morimoto.

“By Ryu. I’ll see you at school.” Seri walked Yuri out.

“Are you really going to leave?”

“Yes.”

“What kind of a friend are you. I’ve been gone for such a long time and you have to leave.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll make some time for you this weekend. Promise.

“But I’m leaving this weekend.”

“You’re such a kid. Bye.” Yuri closed the door behind him.

[I wanted to tell you that I liked you, baka.] Seri frowned, but for her family’s sake, she forced a smile on again.

Seri laid in bed, tossing and turning. She sat up and kicked her feet.

“Ah! It’s so hard to go to sleep.” She smiled as an idea came to her. She got out of bed, and tiptoed down the hall to Ryu’s room. She knocked before entering.

“What do you want Seri-chan?”

“Are you studying?”

“Yes.”

“Would you like some help?” Ryu smiled at his sister.

“Will you?”

“Of course!” Seri climbed onto Ryu’s bed and tutored him up to midnight.

“Hey… let’s call it a night.”

“Okay ane-chan. Thank you.” Seri laid down.

“Go sleep in your room!”

“No. I miss sleeping in the same bed as you.” Ryu smiled.

“I remember those days.” Ryu climbed into bed on the other side.

“Seri-chan, how is America?”

“It’s big and beautiful. Something new in a way, I guess.” Seri turned to face Ryu.

“Want to know a secret?”

“What?”

“Promise not to tell anyone?”

“Yes. Anything to make ane-chan happy.” Seri smiled as she rubbed Ryu’s head.

“I missed my baby brother so much.”

“That’s your secret?” Seri laughed.

“No, baka.”

“Then what is it?” Seri hesitated before answering Ryu.

“I like someone.” Ryu sat up in bed, Seri doing the same.

“Who?”

“I don’t know if I should tell you.”

“Ane-chan,” Ryu whined, causing Seri to laugh.

“It’s someone we’ve all known for a long time.”

[No. Not playboy Yuri.]

“I don’t know who you’re talking about.”

“There’s only one person who’s been our friend my entire life. He’s my best friend actually.”

“Yuri Chinen?”

“You guessed it. But don’t tell anyone, got it? I’ll tell them when the time is right.” Seri hugged Ryu before leaving his room to return to hers.

“I can’t let them get together.”

Due to a leak in the school, classes were canceled for the day.

“Woo!” Ryu and Yuri dashed off school grounds, racing for Yuri’s house, since it was closer.

“Let’s go to your house instead, Ryu.”

“M-my house?”

“Yeah. I want to see Seri.”

“No!” Yuri gave Ryutaro a confusing look.

“She’s uh… out with my grandparents right now.”

“Is she now?”

“Yes.” Yuri shrugged his shoulders.

“Okay. We can go play basketball.”

As soon as they reached Yuri’s house, Yuri got a text message

~ Heard the school closed. Want to go hang out? – Seri ~

Yuri glanced over at Ryu and smirked.

~ Yeah. I’ll be over with Ryu in a bit. – Yuri ~

“Ryu… Seri’s already back. Let’s go to your house.”

“Oh, was that her that just texted you?”

“Yeah. Come on. Let’s go.” Yuri threw his bag on his bed and left, with Ryu following.

[How am I going to keep them from each other?] When they arrived at the Morimoto residency, Serenity was waiting outside for them.

“Why didn’t you guys come here first?”

“Uhh… cause – “

“I wanted to drop off my bag first. I didn’t want to be carrying it around while I was hanging out with you. Besides, you’ll probably make me carry your handbag like you always did.” Seri flashed Yuri a smiled as she held out her hand bag.

“Yes.” She swung around to Yuri’s side and linked her arm around his.

“Ryu, can you tell mom and dad that I’m spending the day with my best friend?” Ryu faked a smile.

“He seems more like your boyfriend.” Seri mischievously smiled.

“Of course he is. Is he not a friend of mine that is a boy?” They all laughed as Ryu entered the gates.

“Yeah, I’ll tell them.”

“Thanks otoutosan.” Ryu watched as Seri and Yuri walked down the street together, looking like a couple. Suspicions began to rise.

[How can she love a playboy like him?] Ryu shook his head as he entered his house.

The week flew by. Ryu did his best to prevent Seri and Yuri from meeting each other. He kept telling himself that it was better this way, so that his ane-chan couldn’t get hurt. But he soon began to notice the change in his sister.

“What’s bothering you?”

“I haven’t seen Yuri all week. And I miss my best friend.”

“Seri, you know that Yuri is a playboy. What makes you think he’ll act any different towards you?”

“I don’t know, but there’s a feeling…”

“Then why don’t you call him? Maybe you can catch him with another girl.”

“It’d hurt, but it’s not like I’d get angry. We’re not an actual couple so I can’t say anything to him.”

“If you know that you’ll get hurt, then why do you still want to be with him?”

“He makes me feel special, in a way no one else can.”

“It’s a charm of his. All playboys have to make girls seem like they’re the world.”

“I’ll call him. Maybe we can hang out today.” Seri stood up and went to her room. A couple minutes later, Ryu went up to Seri’s room to see if anything had happened. He leaned against her door to hear… quietness.

[What’s going on?] He knocked before opening the door, and there was Seri sitting on her bed with silent tears falling

“I think… I think I should give up now and just go home.”

“What are you talking about Seri? What happened?”

“Yes, I came back to visit my family, but I also came back so I could tell Yuri how I felt. Do you know how long I’ve had these feelings? Five years! For five years I’ve loved him from afar! And just like that, I have to throw it all away! I hate what love can do to you.”

“Seri-chan…”

“It’s okay though. I’ll live. I’m leaving tomorrow anyway. It’s not like I’ll ever have to see him again.”

“Seri, what happened?”

“I called him and asked him to meet me. But he said he couldn’t because he was busy. I was about to let it go when I heard a girls voice in the back. ‘Yuri-san, hurry! I’m going to catch a cold if you leave me soaking here!’”.

“I told you what to expect Seri.”

“I know. I just never thought it would happen to me.” Ryutaro gave Serenity a hug and then left for Yuri’s house. He ran through the pouring rain, filled with anger.

[I tried so hard to protect her from you!] He went up to Yuri’s house door and banged on it.

“Yuri Chinen! Open up this door right now! I have some serious matters to discuss with you!” The door opened up and Ryu pushed passed it.

“What’s wrong?”

“You’re the reason!”

“Me? For what?”

“How could you not tell her that you had a girlfriend?!”

“What are you talking about Ryu?”

“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing. And don’t worry, I won’t let my sister become a part of your group of girls.” Upon hearing those words, Yuri immediately knew what Ryu was talking about and smiled.

“Do you think this is funny?”

“In a way, yes. Ryu, you’re Seri’s younger brother and here you are, acting as though you were her older brother.”

“Of course! My sister is everything to me! I’m not going to let her go down the drain because of the monster you are!”

“Hey! Don’t accuse oniisan of being a monster!” Ryu turned towards the source of the voice.
There stood the exact image of Yuri, although it was a she. He slowly returned his attention to Yuri.

“Oniisan?” Yuri smiled.

“Yes. I have a younger sister. She lives in China with my grandparents and is here on a visit.”

“But, Seri said there was a girl…”

“Yes, it was me. But we were building a surprise for ane-chan before she returns to America tomorrow. And oniisan has something he wants to tell her…”

“What? That you like her? I’m still not letting you get near her, you womanizer.” All of a sudden the girl started laughing, nearly crying now.

“Oniisan, a womanizer? Ha! Everyday he tells me how he’s going to tell this one, special girl his feelings. I mean, he’s nice to girls and all, but he still hasn’t had his first kiss.”

“Yuki-san!”

“Sure, he’s surrounded by girls everyday, but it’s not his fault he was born handsome. Rumors are just rumors, and if you believe in those rumors, then you can’t call yourself a true friend of oniisan.”

“Yuki, you can go to your room now. It’s past your bedtime. Thanks for helping. I can take it from here.”

“Okay. And don’t tell me when I should go to sleep and when I shouldn’t. I’m not a little kid anymore.” Yuri grinned at his sister.

“To me you are.” As soon as they were alone, Yuri turned towards Ryu.

“I’m sorry for all the misunderstanding.”

“No. I’m should be apologizing. I call myself your friend, and I turned against you by believing false rumors.”

“Well, I don’t blame you. I never actually made it clear if I was dating or not.”

“Then I’ll let you take the fault.” They both laughed as the awkward atmosphere disappeared.

“I want to show you something and you tell me if it’s good.” Yuri opened up his photography room. Upon seeing it, Ryu nearly fell to his knees. It was like a scene from the movies. Everything was flawless and gorgeous and so planned out.

“She’ll love this.”

“Do you think so?”

“She better, or else she can remain in America forever and I won’t accept her.” Yuri just chuckled and walked Ryu out.

The following day, Ryu went to wake Seri up.

“Why?! My plane doesn’t come for another six hours!”

“I want to have some fun with ane-chan before she returns to America. Do you know how much I’m going to miss you?” Seri smiled at her baby brother.

“Okay, okay. Give me thirty minutes to get dressed.”

“Okay! We’re going to have breakfast at a café first and then we’ll go somewhere fun. Okay?”

“Wow, you have the time planned out already?”

“Of course! I’m not going to find out later that there’s nothing left to do.” After Seri had finished getting ready, she joined Ryu for a walk to the café where they exchanged stories about what happened while Seri was away.

“Wow I never knew that.” There was a moment of silence.

“I’m sorry.” Ryu turned towards Seri.

“For what?”

“I neglected you the whole time I was here. I didn’t even bother to get to know my younger brother again.” Ryu laughed.

“We’re family! We know each other well enough already. But I have to apologize to you too.”

“Why?” All of a sudden, Seri realized that they were in front of Yuri’s house.

“I don’t want to be here, Ryu. Let’s go.”

“No. Stay and listen to what he has to say.”

“Weren’t you the one that said he was all wrong for me and that you knew all along that I’d get hurt?”

“Yes, I did. But I take all those words back. I was wrong about him.”

“Ryu…”

“Ane chan, you deserve the best and this is where it is.” Ryu hugged his sister.

“Have fun all day, but don’t be late for your flight.” All Seri could do was smile and nod. After Ryu left, Seri took calming breaths before ringing the doorbell. The person who opened it was none other than a girl.

[Remember what Ryu said. I deserve the best and this is where it is.]

“Hi! I’m Morimoto Serenity. Is Yuri home?

“Oh my god! You’re so beautiful! So you’re the – “ Yuri nudged in front of his sister.

“Don’t ruin it yet.” Seri stared at the two questioningly.

“What?” Yuri held out his hand.

“Come on, I have something I want to show you.”

“Well, I need to go do some shopping, so I’ll probably be home late oniisan. Have fun!” The girl bounded out the entryway and down the streets.

[Oniisan?]

“Seri?” Seri returned her gaze to Yuri. She looked at his hand and then gazed into his eyes. She smiled as she reached out to grab his hand.

[He’s an oniisan. I’m so stupid. I’m supposed to be his best friend, and yet I didn’t even know that small detail.] As they entered the house, Seri could smell the meal that Yuri had prepared a meal for them.

“What’s so special about today?”

“Nothing. I just wanted to celebrate for my bestest friend!” Seri laughed.

“Yuri… I have something to tell you…”

“Let’s eat first.” Seri just hesitantly stared at Yuri but then nodded her response. The meal was extravagant and delicious.

“When did you cook?”

“Being my best friend, you should know.”

“Well it looks as though I’ll need to get to know my best friend again.” Yuri embarrassedly turned away.

“Why are you such a kid and romantic today?”

“Nothing.” Yuri stood and walked up to Seri. He took her hand and led her to the room that he had shown to Ryu earlier on in the week.

“What is it? You scare me sometimes, with your weird behavior. I’m not used to this.” Yuri laughed.

“Well, you should pretty soon.” They stopped in front of door.

“Go ahead and open it.”

“You’re not coming?”

“Think of it as a gift. I want to see your reaction first.” Seri just smiled.

“Is it Christmas already?” Seri turned the knob and pushed the door open. She gasped upon seeing the room.

There were pictures of her from when she had first gotten to know Yuri up till even just the past week. And in the middle of it all was a poster that read:

You were there all the time, Holding my hand and guiding me through it all. You are my lucky dime

The one and only person that I can show to all I want them to see my happiness. I want them to see that I love you

Aishite-iru Serenity Morimoto. Will you be mine?

Seri turned around and stared speechlessly at Yuri.

“What? You don’t like it?” A smile slowly appeared on Seri’s face as she went up to Yuri and lightly kissed his lips.

“Thank you for such a beautiful gift. And your sister too.”

“That’s all?”

“It should be.” Upon seeing him frown Seri hugged him.

“I love you.”

“I know. For five years now.” Seri immediately pulled back.

“Hey! If that’s how it’s going to be then forget it. I take it b – “ Yuri kissed Seri before she could finish the sentence.

“But I’ve loved you the moment I saw you.” Seri giggled.

“We were only kids then.”

“Yes, but I knew I was going to marry you one day.”

“Marry me? We just started dating!” Yuri smiled as he held Seri in his arms.

“Yes, and we’ll be together forever, right?” Seri smiled.

“I don’t think there’ll ever be a playboy like you in this world.”

“Of course not. I’m a unique one. I’m innocent.”

“I love you.”
